What is a credit union?
Credit unions exist to allow their members to pool their savings, lend those savings to one another and own the organization where they save, borrow, and obtain related financial services. These member-owned, financial cooperatives operate under the philosophy of 'people helping people.'
Credit unions are owned by their members and are governed by a volunteer board of qualified, member-elected directors. This Board of Directors establishes policies and oversees the general operation of the credit union and ensures the financial soundness of the credit union.
Credit unions are not-for-profit institutions, meaning the credit union can use any profits over the amount required to ensure fiscal responsibility to increase savings rates, reduce borrowing rates, and increase or enhance the products and services available to its members.
